Amazon’s planned AI data center in West Texas is putting that issue into the spotlight. The project is expected to use a massive on-site natural gas power plant instead of relying entirely on the local electricity grid.
A Data Center Built Around Its Own Power
The planned facility in Pecos County, Texas, is designed to have access to up to 7.65 gigawatts of power from 35 natural gas turbines.
The project would initially operate separately from the Texas power grid.
That approach reflects a growing trend in the AI industry: building dedicated power infrastructure alongside large data centers because traditional grids can struggle to provide enough electricity quickly.
Why Does AI Need So Much Power?
Training and running advanced AI models requires huge amounts of computing power.
Large data centers need electricity not only for GPUs and other hardware, but also for cooling, networking, storage, and supporting infrastructure.
As companies build larger AI systems, their energy requirements continue to grow.
This is turning electricity availability into a major factor in deciding where new AI data centers can be built.
The Environmental Debate
The project is also attracting attention because its natural gas power plant has been permitted to emit up to 33 million tons of carbon dioxide per year.
That does not necessarily mean the plant will emit that amount every year. The figure represents its permitted maximum.
